New Partnership: An Account with Gestures that Count

From November 2020, with the opening of a new Novo Banco 100% account, customers will be able to choose one of three projects to support, and Zero Waste Lab promotes one of them - the new REPLAY Project that will rethink the universe of toys and test a circuit for creative recycling of toys in partnership with Precious Plastic Portugal!

Novo Banco established a partnership with 3 projects from 3 associations:

- One from social nature, the Projeto Semear of the BIPP Association - Inclusion for Disability;
- An environmental one, the Zero Waste Lab, the REPLAY Project;
- And another one, from a cultural and social scope, the Este Espaço que Habito, of the Movimento de Expressão Fotográfica.

You can read more about this initiative and the three projects here.

We are very happy with this partnership and with the possibility of leveraging a project that we consider very important and transformative! We would like to thank Novo Banco and all future clients for their support and trust!

About REPLAY, which will soon have a dedicated website:

ZERO WASTE LAB
REPLAY PROJECT
CREATIVE TOY RECYCLING

ZERO WASTE LAB is a non-profit environmental organisation with a mission to promote the Zero Waste concept and constuctively contribute to the transition to a waste-free future of human environmental regeneration.

The REPLAY Project - Creative Recycling of Toys, promotes the circularity of plastic and other materials in toys, addressing the toys theme in a holistic, investigative and experimental way.

Conceived in partnership with OpoLab - promoter of the Precious Plastic Portugal community, has a vast network of partners and expresses the power of collaboration and complementarity in solving problems that affect us all.

THE PROBLEM

Every year, in Portugal, around 30 million units of toys with plastic components are landfilled. In the current waste management systems, there is no suitable destination for toys, mostly ending up in landfills.
The quality of toy materials also tops the list of complaints from European citizen on toxicity issues.

THE SOLUTION

Mobilize a toy collection network, supported by citizens, with due monitoring throughout the process. Testing, in partnership with Precious Plastic Portugal - an OpoLab project, the creation of a toy recycling circuit in 5 municipalities across the country, using the creative communities Precious Plastic for the upcycling of plastic. Develop new useful objects from toys, creating bridges between the community, schools, universities and technology centers. Streamline the public discussion about the quality of toys and the quality of play.

GOALS

Boost a toy collection campaign, with a network of delivery points in Porto, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Évora, Cascais and Lisbon. Raising awareness and training families for material literacy, toxicity issues and conscientious consumption. Enable the creative recycling of toys into new useful parts, from end-of-life toys. Create a collection unit for placement in playground, which promotes the exchange of toys in good condition in communities. Public debates on extended producer responsability in the toy flow. Documentary production.

The REPLAY pilot project will thus lay the foundations for the development of national system for recycling end-of-life toys, guided by the circular economy objectives and more precisely through the following 3 axes:

1 - Increase environmental awareness and co-create innovative solutions to reduce waste, encouraging networking and mobilizing the various members of civil society - families, associations, students, companies, creatives, scientific community, municipalities.

2 - Reassess the life cycle of toys at the systemic level, in relation to the 4Rs of sustainability, namely: Rethink, Reduce, Reuse/Repair and Recycle.

3 - Create sustainable technological solutions for the creative transformation of plastic toys, encouraging complementary and coordination between the various solutions.
