COMPOSTING SCHOOL

Zero Waste Lab has teamed up with the composting company Mudatuga and Hortas Lx, dedicated to permaculture and organic farming, to create the first free composting school accessible to all who want to participate.

Zero Waste Lab has teamed up with the composting company  Mudatuga and Hortas Lx, which are dedicated to permaculture and organic farming, to create the first free and accessible composting school for everyone who wants to participate. “This will be a large-scale action to boost the composting movement in Portugal. The objective is to teach different methods of recovering biowaste and show that any waste can be composted - even cooked ones. It's just a matter of using the proper method for each type of organic waste”, says Carolina Bianchi, co-founder of Mudatuga.

With the support of the Environmental Fund under the Program “Supporting a new environmental culture – Sustainable Production and Consumption”, the project focuses on connecting generations across the country, calling for action by each one for all of us. It is also intended to create a movement about composting on social networks through the hashtag #escolaacompostar.

LEARN TO COMPOST EVERYWHERE!

The new project has more than 1000 spots for this free course, which contains practical lessons that go far beyond the traditional garden composting, to disseminate more compact shapes, ideal for apartments, including the Japanese Bokashi method. Participants will be able to enroll for free in different classes between August and October 2021. “The most important thing for us is to reach as many people as possible and create a composting revolution in Portugal,” adds Luana Garcia, co-founder of Mudatuga. Classes will be weekly and each will have a total of four virtual classes on zero waste and different composting methods, in addition to a face-to-face class at the end, on home gardens, ensuring that it is possible to motivate students to close the cycle. “We want to show that it is possible to create a vegetable garden anywhere”, defends André Maciel, creator of the PURISIMPL e Hortas Lx project.
Registration is open, can be made through the website and online classes will be available to people from anywhere in the country. Practical classes, for the time being, are taking place in Lisbon.
After classes, the team will keep track and monitor domestic composting through an online platform, where manuals and recordings of the classes will also be available, as well as a discussion forum for participants to exchange experiences. “We believe that the most important thing is to create impact in a chain, and therefore we want people to be able to become multipliers of composting after this course”, says Maria Cristina Sousa, from Zero Waste Lab.

THE COMPOST REVOLUTION CONTINUES - GET INVOLVED!

Now, the project's creators want to go further: to carry out more extra practical sessions in cities other than Lisbon, the team is raising funds through crowdfunding on the PPL platform. “Many people who are participating in the online sessions asked us to go to more cities for the practical sessions. However, our budget is not enough for this, so we need everyone's help to promote and support the expansion of our Escola de Compostar”, comments Sara Morais Pinto, co-founder of Zero Waste Lab. a minimum of 5,000 euros to expand the project. “If the goal is exceeded, we will hold even more sessions in different cities. The more the better!” says Carolina Bianchi.
