Green Lab Certification

Zero Waste Lab is now certified as a Green Level Certified Lab!

Green Lab Certification

It is with great joy that we tell this story. In 2022, we kickstarted a pilot-project with the Genetics Laboratory at the Faculty of Medicine, Universidade do Porto, in order to facilitate an environmental assessment and certification path, according to the sustainability criteria defined by the American NGO My Green Lab.

The health sector has an enormous environmental impact, which is hardly known or even addressed in our country, Portugal - an enormous waste of opportunity, especially when numerous studies prove that in this area, environmental savings generally come alongside economic savings. Research laboratories (in this case also teaching) also have a more intensive consumption of resources, and therefore an increased responsibility towards the whole - the continuation of Life.

Zero Waste Lab mediated this process, through the capable hands of Graça Salcedo, who conducted and guided the impact assessment process, the implementation of improvement measures, team(s) training, and a new assessment 16 months later.
The results arrived: the Lab achieved the "Green" level Certification, now holding a more refined plan for continuous improvement.

This was the first Research Laboratory certified by My Green Lab in Portugal. May it be the first of many, bonded within the strength of a serious, practical and beneficial network of responsibility and collaborative evolution for the benefit of all! We are full of motivation!

Thanks to the University Lab for the courage to embark on this challenge, and also to MyGreenLab for all the direct and indirect support in the strengthening of a movement that already has more than 1700 certified laboratories around the world, building a global network of sustainability in science.

In our view, it is about rescuing and nurturing the concept of Science with Heart!
